The issue of race is a subject that is unavoidable for South Africans. With its long history of Apartheid; the birth of democracy in 1994; and a greater wave of transformation recently in the university – racial privilege is the topic on many young people’s minds. How can we have the conversation about this contentious subject without becoming counter-productive in the way that we do? It starts by acknowledging the oppression black people felt in the past and still feel today to some extent, understanding that there is no quick solution. Racial diversity is worth celebrating. And when it is, that is where we see the beauty of unity in diversity.
